Well I certainly didn’t expect this. This is one apple that fell so far from the tree, I’m not sure if it’s still an apple. And I’m not saying that in a terribly bad way. Just in a Tim Burton didn’t make a remake, he came close to making a new movie altogether kind of way. This version was not bad, but it wasn’t close to the original in greatness in my mind. Most remakes aren’t, but the original Chocolate Factory is one of my favorite movies of all time. I had hoped this one had a chance, but reality soon set in, and it really didn’t. A lot of people get weirded out by the original and those oompa loompas, but I never had a problem with em. The remake was one of the strangest movies I have ever seen though. Every aspect of it was creepier than the first. I think Burton did an amazing job differentiating this movie from the original in a way only he could. The original was a children’s movie, but I’m not so sure about this one. And Johnny Depp… what can I say? He sure was interesting in this role. He seemed to over act in a lot of places and it made everything even more weird. I did enjoy the fact that this took place in modern times though. The scenery was amazing. I guess the production was just great. But what was with these oompa loompas. This was probably the part I was the most unhappy with. I didn’t like the one guy doing everything. And I didn’t like their songs. They weren’t catchy at all. Most of the time I couldn’t even understand what they were saying. Those songs were such a big part of the first one. That’s what everyone remembers. These oompa scenes just tried too hard. This whole movie just might have been too weird for its own good. It’s just so hard to do a remake, I wonder why people keep trying to do them. If you do it exactly like the first, it’ll probably never compare. If you change it, it’s upsetting. There’s no good way to do it. Producers and writers must just love the challenge of trying to pull it off. Burton did an ok job at this one, but I’d still choose to watch the original 9 out 10 times any week. In fact, I’ve probably come close to watching the original 9 times in a week before. I definitely want to see this one again because I think it can grow on me, but I’m really not sure if I’ll ever see this one 9 times in my lifetime.
