Phoenix

Vacation / Thursday, May 17th, 2007

So I never posted about our trip to Phoenix and now everyone who had a chance to go, except Rob who’s holding out for the much better San Diego trip in July, wants to know how it went. Well it was great. I missed 2 days of work, got to see a ball game and I only spent like $150 for the whole thing.

We left Sunday afternoon and drove to Phoenix. We drove through the dam, through the boring desert where there were cool mountain formations, through the town of Kingman which is like the only stop before you get to the Phoenix suburbs, the town of Surprise!, a Phoenix suburb, where I truly was surprised because I came upon my first traffic light in like a hundred miles after being lulled to sleep by desert and metal dinosaurs and tumbleweed. Oh yeah and the car got hit by a tornado on the way too. It was insane. I really felt bad for the truck a few hundred yards in front who got the brunt of the tornado and tumbleweed but we got hit nonetheless. We also drove past the alien looking University of Phoenix football spaceship… err stadium in Glendale which looked awesome and I hope I can get there one day. Anyway, it took like 5-5.5 hours to get to the hotel and that was stopping for lunch too so all in all, not bad. We checked in, watched part of the Phillies/Giants game and then drove to Arizona State which was like a mile from our hotel.

At ASU we ran into hippies. A lot of friggin hippies. The place was nothing but people who apparently don’t like to bathe. I don’t get it. I don’t remember all the hippies from when I was there before but I remembered I didn’t like the school and I’m even more glad I didn’t go there. So we found a bar, had a few beers and watched the end of the Phils game. Then we ate some dinner, headed back to the hotel and went to the bar ’til last call.

The next day we headed to the ballpark early to take a ballpark tour. It was pretty neat and we got to see a few really neat things like giant holes in walls caused from baseballs traveling into the pressbox at a million miles an hour. We also got into the press areas, the DBacks dugout and on the field.

After that, we got some lunch at the Fridays that was actually inside the ballpark and watched some BP and warmups. The game was alright too. Matt said it was the best Phillies loss he’s been to. It was a good time cause we had tons of Phillies fans around us. And because Bobby Abreu isn’t around anymore, we got to heckle some shmuck Yankees fan that was sitting a few rows in front of us. Well until he got kicked out of the park for throwing a ball at the Flyin’ Hawaiian. They had Rolling Rock at the park but like usual, they treated it like an import and it was $8 w/out tip. However since we were there all day, we ended up not paying parking because for the tour you pay leaving and for the game you pay going in so we completely missed getting ripped off there.

All in all it was a good time. We drove home the next day and stopped in Wickenburg which may just be the most technologically advanced, lowest population hick town in the world. You can stop at a saloon and get drunk with some yokels or go to Burger King for some free Wi-Fi. The rest of the way home was just compounds full of cults just waiting to overthrow the government… or so it seemed. I have no idea what other reason you would have for living completely alone that far away from civilization. But yeah, I can’t wait for San Diego.
