San Diego Part 1

Sports, Vacation / Sunday, July 22nd, 2007

San Diego was great. We left on Thursday around 6PM and got to SD around 11. Then we checked in, went to the room and… had to leave the room because they put us in a room with 1 king bed. Now I don’t know what kind of stuff the guy at the desk thought was going to happen with 3 guys checking into one room but yeah, that wasn’t going to work. We went back down and got another room, however this room was in the 2nd tower of the hotel; the second tower which just happened to be a 10 minute walk away. Eh, it wasn’t so bad. We also got our Starhot card which got us 50% off food, drink and oh yes, alcohol for the duration of our stay. It was after 1AM before we got to sleep, but don’t worry, we were only getting up at like 6AM.

So we got up early Friday morning, went to breakfast and then headed off to the zoo by 9. It was a great morning, the sun wasn’t out so it wasn’t hot, and it wasn’t too cold. It was also early enough that all the important animals were up and about. We went right to the feeble pandas who were actually alive, eating and one was even playing with a ball. Then it was off to the polar bears, by way of the grumpy zebras, but they were freaking amazing. There was more fighting going on than a UFC event. Speaking of the next UFC event… if it’s not Randy Couture versus a polar bear in the octagon, I’m not watching it. More highlights of the zoo were the crazy hippo, the lazy rhino, the elephant who pissed what had to be 5 gallons of urine and of course the Galapagos tortoises. They are the greatest animals in all of the land.

After we killed the zoo in like 5 hours, we headed back to the hotel for some drinks, some dinner and then off to the game. The game was great. Other than the fact that it was like 6 degrees below 0 and we had shorts and sandals on. I thought San Diego was 80 and sunny all year long. Anyway, Utley hit a shot to dead center field, pretty impressive in Petco, and Mr. 10,000 came back from getting roughed up by the ump to get the W. And we got to laugh all the way to the Gaslamp district.

Yes, the way too trendy Gaslamp district. Just not my cup of tea. I mean the women are gorgeous and they are everywhere but all the eye candy in the world just might not be worth it for the amount of trendiness that is going on in that place. It’s more expensiveness and trendiness than any 5 cities need. We chilled down there for a while and then headed back to the hotel led by the one insane cab driver. I mean the guy is supposed to know his city in which he drives in to make his living yet he was turning the wrong way down streets and just couldn’t stay in his lane. Good thing Rob was in the front seat cause I just couldn’t watch.

Saturday morning we slept in and then headed to Mission Beach for a little while to get our feet wet, check it out and eat the greasiest breakfast sandwiches from Jack In The Box ever. Then we headed back to the hotel for more drinking and then off to game #2.

Once again, we took a cab. Which leads me to ask; What the hell is wrong with cab drivers? I mean this guy was definitely the 3rd craziest cab driver ever with the 1st being the guy from Friday night. What was the 2nd? The 2nd hasn’t driven me anywhere yet. But the 3rd was alright until he made the most illegal move ever, making a blatant right hand turn from the left hand turn lane across a straight lane AND a right hand turn lane while we all had the green light. Insane. And he also drove most of the way on the shoulder. I think I’m changing my order to this guy as #1 and Friday night’s guy as #3 with #2 still yet to be determined.

Back to the game. Now you gotta understand. Seeing a Phils win in person is more elusive than seeing a Panda bear not half dead. It certainly isn’t impossible, but good luck. Rob might have had the longest wait but Matt and I have seen more losses in the last few years than we can count. Luckily I was 1-0 in Petco park before this trip and after Friday, 2-0. But we came to SD expecting to see loss 10,005 and instead we saw 2 of the best victories I’ve seen live. Nothing’s better than being at a road win… except being at 2 straight road wins. The Phils, led by Jamie Moyersaurus, walked all over the Padres. Howard hit 2 shots and everyone pretty much joined in on the fun. Especially us doing our best to get hated on by the locals. It was just freaking great.

After the game we went right back to the hotel to start drinking.

I’ve been writing this post all night. I’m going to bed. I’ll finish it tomorrow. And then maybe I’ll proofread this long post and add zoo pictures as well.
