Philly Sports

4 weeks ago I don’t think anyone would have thought that on Sunday, October 5th, it would be the Phillies whose season was going strong and the Eagles whose season was as good as done however that’s how it looks right now. The Phils came through today, winning their NLDS series in 4 and now host the Dodgers starting Thursday. That’s awesome. I should have stayed home today and watched the Phils close out their series instead of going out to watch the Eagles look like the Eagles.

They looked horrible for a 2nd week in a row; this time to an NFC East opponent, this time at home. With their record now at 2-3 the Eagles have to travel to the 49ers who are 2-2 and have looked semi-decent. I’m just disgusted.

I don’t usually call for Andy’s head but these last 2 weeks were horrible. It might not be him calling the plays, I guess everyone on that staff needs to be held accountable for what has happened these last 2 games, but something has to happen. Last week the Eagles couldn’t get 1 yard when they needed it in a goal line situation and today they couldn’t get it done again in practically the same situation. Run, run, run, nothing. Without Shawn Andrews your line is obviously in bad shape. You run every down in that situation but throw every down from anywhere else on the field even though you’re winning or only down by 2. And you started the game mixing it up really well today and it worked. Imagine that.

And what the F was that timeout call at the end of the half? You had two 3 and outs, the Redskins were moving the football the last few drives and you give them life at the end of the half like you do for every team, every week. Then they turn it into 3 and go into the half down by only 5. I don’t know whose call that was but it smells like Andy’s horrible clock management to me.

Normally being 2-3 in week 5 wouldn’t be a season breaker but I’m afraid it may be now. The Giants are 4-0 with 2 more really easy games to play, the Cowboys should be 4-1 after today with 2 cake games coming up and the Redskins are now 4-1 with 3 easy games on the way. That means that in 4 weeks, if the Eagles can somehow manage to handle their 3 semi-easy opponents around their bye week, they’re only 5-3 and still in a pretty tough hole. It’s far from impossible but for a team that hasn’t shown ANY consistency from anywhere on the field, it just may be. The offense is sporadic as usual, the run D is hot and cold, the pass D is hot and cold, the special teams is again less than stellar. Even Desean’s punt return today probably should have been negated by a block in the back that didn’t affect the play but was a block in the back nonetheless. 203 rushing yards today, 200 passing yards for 3 TDs last week and 312 passing yards for 3 TDs in week 2 against Dallas. That’s what we gave up in our 3 losses. In 5 games.

So like every other season, here we are again looking for miracles, spending week in and week out talking ourselves into how the Eagles can come back and win. We could barely muster anything when the division was weak. Now that our division is incredible, it seems even less likely. Sure, anything can happen. The Cowgirls, Vagiants and Deadskins will probably lose a game or two that they shouldn’t but there’s just no more room for error for the Eagles with a lot of football left to play. I don’t think I’ll be talking myself into any miraculous comebacks this year.
