Right now the pinnacle of my weekly TV watching goes something like Lost, Chuck and Fringe. Lost unfortunately… devastatingly… and even more devastatingly… only has 9 hours left. Then when that series is finished, the other 2 will sit very securely at the top spots. After those 3, as far as non sitcoms are concerned, it’s fair game. I have to tell you though, Spartacus: Blood and Sand on Starz is quickly climbing the ranks to the top of my TV ladder.
I don’t have Starz but I’ve been watching the series on Netflix each week. It started off as something I was kind of interested in but the first couple episodes didn’t necessarily blow me away. I kept watching it because I had just gotten Netflix and I could. However, it is now something I look forward to each week. After the last few weeks, I really look forward to it. Spartacus, like Lost, is completely unpredictable. Case in point, tonight’s episode gave me a punch in the stomach feeling I haven’t felt since Mr. Eko was suddenly killed on Lost. I was floored.
The story is good and the action scenes are pretty awesome. It’s nice and bloody and there are plenty of smoking hot chicks completely naked almost every week. A couple of episodes actually felt more like porno with a plot than vice versa. I have to warn you though. There is way too much dick in the show. I think they may have heard some complaints and toned it back a little the last few weeks but you’ve been warned. It’s always balanced with hot chicks though so you can deal with it. If you were able to get through Watchmen, you’ll be fine.
Regardless, I don’t normally recommend shows but if you have Starz or preferably Netflix, you may want to start catching up on this show. It’s only up to episode 10 and there are only like 13 episodes this first season. You can easily catch up over the summer. It seems like it’s going to be a cult favorite and should stick around a few more seasons as the show seems to have a good social media following. That’s what it takes nowadays.
The fact that a show is completely unpredictable normally means you have a good one on your hands. Like Lost, when you realize the show isn’t going to be on forever, you can take chances that make a show something special. That’s what dramas need. A story with an already written ending. Get your story heard, end it and move on. Unlike Heroes which will drag on forever and just keep sucking. I had to get that last part in.
