Dana Elcar, the actor who played MacGyver’s boss Peter Thornton, passed away yesterday at the age of 77. He wasn’t just Mac’s boss. He was his best friend and confidant. For that, he will always be remembered. Just some facts for those of you who did not know too much about Dana: He appeared in the pilot episode, however it was not as Pete Thornton, the man we all came to love. He played Andy Colson, just some lab chief of operations. He didn’t appear as Pete until episode 11, because the writers liked him in the pilot so much, they wanted him around all the time. Dana also began going blind from glaucoma towards the end of the show. By the time it actually ended, he was almost completely blind. Rather than hang up his shoes though, he suggested to the writers that they just write it into his character. Over the final seasons, not only did we watch MacGyver overcome amazing obstacles, we watched Dana face his real life obstacle right in front of the camera. That’s dedication holmes.
