NFL Suicide Pool – Week 3

Packers at Rams. Easy right? The Rams may not win a game this year and I thought the Packers should win the North fairly handily. That’s before I realized the Packers were suiting up a JV O-line. We got through this one because the Packers eventually realized they were playing the Rams and started pulling away at the end. However… it was far too close for way too long and if Aaron Rodgers doesn’t start getting some help soon, he’s going to be in a fully body cast by the end of the year. We’re talking case of the Marc Bulgers. Regardless, week 4 here I come.

Weekly Fantasy Rant ‘09 Take 2

Dude, Anthony Gonzalez, wtf!? You’re not even on my team and you’re totally screwing me. Week 1, Reggie Wayne puts up 18 points. This week 4. And here I actually thought you going down last week was going to get Reggie some more looks. All it did was get Reggie double covered all day and let Clark run free as usual. And to think I wanted to over draft you. So thankful I didn’t get you at all. And holy crap Eagles Def., wtf!? I didn’t think you’d shut down the Saints offense but I thought you’d at least show up. That has to be the biggest swing from week to week of all time. 29 points in week 1 and then 2 points in week 2. And I can’t even credit you for the 2 points! It was really a designed Saints safety that gave you the 2 points. If you didn’t spot me 4 weeks of points up front, I don’t know what I would do right now. MFers. Oh, and Packers O-line. If you don’t pick it up next week, I don’t know what I’ll do… but I’ll sure be angry. Ryan Grant apparently can’t do it alone. You guys can’t be the crappiest team in the league. I’m not buying it. Losing to the Bengals… man, oh, man.

NFL Suicide Pool – Week 2

This week’s game was a lot less stressful than last week’s Chargers scare. We took the Minnesota Vikings on the road over the Detroit Lions. I mean the Lions haven’t won a game since December 2007… How the hell are they going to stop Adrian Peterson from running all over the place? He looked like a monster last week against Cleveland. It should be like Godzilla tearing through Japan. Only worse. Not even Megatron will be able to stop him. Ooooh! Who would win in a fight… Godzilla or Megatron? We will see. Roll that beautiful bean footage.

Well Megatron jumped out first giving the Lions a decent lead. The Vikings just came out flat and were actually in a 10-0 hole through most of the 2nd quarter. It didn’t seem like they could get anything going. Despite that though, you never really thought they were in danger of losing the game. A better way to put it is you never really thought the Lions were capable of winning this game. And that’s how it went. The Vikings didn’t go all Hiroshima on the Lions however they won handily, 27-13, and we now move on to week 3. Nice.

Weekly Fantasy Rant ‘09 Take 1

Everybody’s favorite Terententen segment is back! It’s time for your weekly fantasy rant, 2009 edition. So sit back, relax, and get ready because hopefully I’ll keep the will to keep these posts flowing week to week.

You obviously read in my last fantasy post, Fantasy Football Draft 2009 that I was quite pleased with my draft and was expecting some good things from this team. Unfortunately, I wasn’t expecting these good things to start coming right away because week 1 didn’t show the best of matchups. It started off with the first game of the season and my 1RB (Chris Johnson) vs the best Def. in all of the land, the Steelers. FAIL! Then my 2RB and 3RB sure didn’t pick up the slack, barely breaking 20 points combined. EPIC FAIL! 3 running backs, 30 frickin’ points? Even I didn’t expect it to be that low. That sure won’t get you far.

Don’t worry though, this column isn’t just about those fails, it’s also about the 1QB (Drew Brees) tossing 6 TDs and my Def. (Philadelphia) putting up 30 points thanks to Delhomme apparently being French for turnover. Oh, and when both WRs find the end zone, it almost always turns out to be a decent week. That my friends is how you finish with 170 points. See, everything turned out great in the end. I ended up having one of my best fantasy weeks ever, reminiscent of those Adrian Peterson rookie year weeks. Now I don’t expect my Def. to put up 30 points ever again let alone every week, but I do expect my RBs to pick up the production by like 75%/week which should pick up some of the slack. All in all, week 1 was an epic success. Let’s keep it up Galapagos Tortoises… way to come out the gates strong.

NFL Suicide Pool – Week 1

Oh man, it only took 1 week for me to curse this year’s suicide pool and swear it off forever. Last year we were out in like 3 weeks because Miami decided it wanted to bring back the wildcat when the Patriots were least expecting it. That was a terrible punch in the gut. However, this year Rob and I had a great plan and 2 weeks ago I was already waiting for this year’s winnings to come my way. No way we could lose. I don’t care where they’re playing… the yearly “Superbowl Bound” San Diego Super Chargers cannot lose to the Oakland Raiders. The game was in Oakland but it could be on the moon and the Chargers could be down a man and they should still beat on the JaMarcus Russell led Raiders. Well we all saw that was not the case last night. The Raiders looked like they were playing for something and the Chargers looked like crap. The offense was offensive and the defense looked embarrassing. Somehow, probably just because they were supposed to, the Chargers won with 18 seconds left on the clock, and we get to play another day. But I’ll tell you, I was not a happy man after Russell completed a 4th and 15 bomb for a TD to go ahead with about 2 minutes to go. Apparently the Chargers are just in a league of their own. We have the Superbowl winners like the Pats and the Steelers, the Superbowl losers like the Bills, the NFC/AFC Championship losers like the Eagles and the “Superbowl Bound but don’t come close” teams like the Chargers. I’ll tell you what. Unless they’re playing the Cowboys, Giants or Redskins or the Eagles playoff hopes are on the line, I will never root for that sorry excuse of a football team again. You can bet on that.

Fantasy Football Draft 2009

Today was the big Fantasy Football draft we’ve all been waiting for since football season ended way back when. It seemed like such a long time coming since we decided to skip playing fantasy baseball this year. Sure my heart is a whole lot healthier without the stress of the long fantasy baseball season but the lack of fantasy sure left a void in my life. I was going pretty crazy the last week. Today was rough. The good news is, the draft wasn’t.

That’s because I’m pretty happy how everything worked out. It was probably the fastest draft our league has ever had, coming in at around 1 hour and 15 minutes for a 10 team, 2 QB fantasy football league. For me, the first few rounds flew by and everything fell into place. I had the 8th overall pick which is normally where I land in whatever Yahoo! likes to call random. Regardless, with the 8th pick I was able to snag Drew Brees whom I would have taken as high as 3. Pretty good deal. Still looking for best available, I took Chris Johnson at 13. That pick could be hit or miss. Then when the 28th pick came back around and Ryan Grant was on the board, I jumped on him. I pretty much liked him where I took Johnson so I loved to get him 15 picks later. At 4 I needed to target a trusty WR so I got Peyton Manning’s new undisputed #1 target, Reggie Wayne. Sometime between my Brees pick and now, QBs flew off the board. Not wanting to get stuck with a garbage #2 QB with my 5th pick I took Matt Ryan. I’m unfortunately expecting big things from Matty Ice in his 2nd year.

At this point in the draft I was still rolling. 2QBs, 2RBs, and a stud WR who I’ve always wanted to have. I wanted to solidify my wideouts so in the 6th round I took 3rd year WR Dwayne Bowe. The say that’s the year WRs finally figure it all out so hopefully he can build on his already good numbers. Then with 1 important position left to fill, W/R, Larry Johnson falls into my lap with the 68th pick in the 7th round. I don’t particularly like the Chiefs but I do like those last 2 picks.

That’s it, I can relax… and that’s what I did. The rest of the draft is best available to fill bye weeks. Everything has worked out until this point. When I needed a position, the guy I wanted was there. I’m pretty happy but we’re just halfway done. I then take Kyle Orton as my 3rd string backup QB, DeSean Jackson as my backup WR, and Felix Jones who was owning last year until he got injured. I still needed a TE but after the big 4 were gone, they’re all pretty much the same so I flipped a hypothetical coin and went with Owen Daniels. Defensively I took Philadelphia. Not too confident with this group just from preseason but it’s only preseason. I’m hoping they can turn it on once the season starts. JJ will be missed.

3 rounds left, nothing I really want. Take 2 kickers and call me in the morning. Jason Elam and Robbie Gould. That’ll do pig… that’ll do. Then for the 15th and final round I see a good deal of decent players left. I was between LeSean McCoy who looked insanely awesome in the preseason and Donald Brown. Lucky for me McCoy went right before my pick so I took Brown. I like it.

All in all, my biggest concern of the draft was taking Kyle Orton as my #3 QB. However if my #3 QB is my big mistake of the draft, I should be in for a pretty good year. Fantasy football is a good deal of luck. Players need to stay healthy and they need to perform but I think I have a very competitive team. Only time will tell though. The season starts in 5 days and I can’t wait now. Ahh, the joy of fantasy sports.

Jonny Greenwood on the MP3

Here’s a quick little interview with Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood on his thoughts about the MP3 and sound quality. Dithering: Jonny Greenwood. Seeing as Radiohead are one of the most popular bands in the world, Matt loves them so much, and they’re also at the forefront of this new digital music movement it’s interesting to hear his take on the future of music. They released their last album, In Rainbows, digital only through their website months before it was available in CD form and it made a huge splash in the music industry. More recently they’ve released a few singles on their website, obviously digital only copies.

I’m personally not in love with this whole movement because I like album art and liner notes however the moment I’m done flipping through the pages, I instantly rip the music and throw the CD on a shelf seldom to be heard from again. It’s kind of sad. Regardless his answer to the last question really hit home for me. It’s a demon that I’ve definitely been fighting with over the last decade. I’m afraid I’m losing.

SFJ: What are your favorite and least favorite aspects of the MP3 age?

JG: The downside is that people are encouraged to own far more music than they can ever give their full attention to. People will have MP3s of every Miles Davis’ record but never think of hearing any of them twice in a row—there’s just too much to get through. You’re thinking, “I’ve got ‘Sketches of Spain and ‘Bitches Brew’—let’s zip through those while I’m finishing that e-mail.” That abundance can push any music into background music, furniture music.
