Weezer Memories at the Joint

2 weeks ago I didn’t even know the show was coming and last night I was so glad I didn’t miss it. Not sure how a show like this went under my radar but I’ll just blame it on Stargate. And maybe the last few Weezer albums. Still, last night was the final Weezer Memories show and it had to trump any other show before it. Instead of doing a night of Blue Album + Greatest hits and then a second night of Pinkerton + Greatest hits, Vegas got a 1 night only Blue Album + Pinkerton show. A show for the ages and it didn’t disappoint.

This was my 3rd Weezer show and after the first 2 shows, I really wasn’t sure what I was going to get. The first show at the BJC, in between Green and Maladroit, was awesome, full of energy and tons of fun. The 2nd show (in the 120 degree Vegas sun) had a hell of a somehow energetic crowd, but the band just wasn’t there. This crowd though was pretty diverse with middle aged Weezer fans, their kids who are now Weezer fans, people in between and don’t forget the dude who was so high on heroin that it was just a shame because he practically slept standing up through the entire show.

The drugged guy might not have brought anything to the show but age apparently doesn’t matter because this crowd brought it, the band brought it and the place was electric. Everyone in the room has known practically every word to every song they played last night for so many years now that the tunes are ingrained in us all and everyone just fed off of that energy.

The highlight of the show for me was, unexpectedly, when they did “The Good Life”. Listening to the room, it sounded like most at the show agreed. I think it reached us all a little bit more now than it used to for some reason. “I don’t wanna be an old man anymore”? Standing in one place without walking for 90 minutes made my back feel like that last night more than ever. Still, it didn’t really matter all that much because we were all living the good life for 90 minutes and having that much fun.

When they finished the Blue album, it was pretty bittersweet, but knowing Pinkerton was coming made it alright. When Rivers finished up “Butterfly”… man, that was something else. I really felt like I had seen a show that I will never see again. I’m still just so glad I was there.
