Watchmen

Wow, first movie review in over a year but this movie's worth it. Saw Watchmen this afternoon and it certainly lived up to all the Internet hype of the last year or so. It wasn't your typical Hollywood superhero movie, in fact it was really nothing like any superhero movie I've ever seen. Dark and beautifully directed, it turned into a stellar all around movie. The story was amazing and had me hooked for all 2 hours and 45 minutes. It was a perfect length as I think they covered everything that needed to be covered. There were quite a few characters and they were all so deep and compelling you couldn't help but to be drawn into this alternate reality where superheros just might not be so super after all. Who knew a superhero's only problems weren't just some girl troubles and a few bank robberies?

My only problems with this story were that I think the writers may have been a little stereotypical. I mean what would a comic book fan want more than some superheroes? How about some unnecessary graphic sex scenes with multiple O faces. Yeah, that'll be cool, let's do it. Boobies, boobies! Look, I love nudity perhaps more than the next guy but I found out today that I don't like it in my movies where nudity probably shouldn't be. Nothing signals my brain to stop thinking about how we're gonna save the world like showing some pretty graphic sex scenes with a really, really hot Malin Akerman. That was #2. #1? If I don't want to look at hot naked chicks in a movie, I really don't want to see penis every other scene. Or ever. Doctor Manhattan, you've seen pants. I saw you wearing them when you had your suit on. Try keeping them on. I mean a loin cloth would suffice. Hell, a damn leaf. Just cover that thing up. And I don't want to hear anyone try to justify it because he's Doctor Manhattan and he's above wearing pants or try to philosophy it or something. Look... if there was ever a time to make an exception in a movie, that was the time.

Hmm, looks like the "dislike" paragraph is longer than the "like" paragraph but that's not how I really feel. I just can't joke about the things I liked in the movie and penis jokes are always funny. I really, really liked this movie. Just know that it's not Spiderman (I wish the people sitting behind me knew that) and it probably should be NC-17 (way too many kids going to see this film). There was a time when it sounded like this movie wasn't gonna come out and it would have been a terrible shame if no one could see it. Can't wait to watch it again. Hell, I may even have to find out how to get my hands on the comics.

Third Annual Terententen Lord of the Rings Festival

And so it came to pass that on the 16th day of the 2nd month of the year 2008, the Third Annual Terententen Lord of the Rings Festival came to fruition. It was slightly different than the 2nd annual. We started at 9:35AM but still ended at 11:00PM. And crazily, it seemed even faster than last year's. 13 1/2 hours felt like 5 tops. Ridiculous. It's a great day. I already can't wait until next year's. I think I want to try to shorten it down to 13 hours if possible. We'll have to work on that. I think it's possible. Or I can just stop being anal and let it run 13 hours 10 minutes. Or maybe leave it alone. I can't handle 10 minutes. Less worry about timing, more worry about the greatest movies of all time. Better yet, February 2009, take your time. Time's moving way too fast.

Cloverfield

On the same note, I saw Cloverfield last Friday and was too lazy to mention it. It was the first time I've went to an opening night movie in years but I think we had to go opening night to keep Matt from killing himself. And the movie was everything it was supposed to be. I didn't realize it'd be so crazy with the handheld camera, you knew from the trailer that they'd be in there, but I also thought they'd have regular camera shots in there. If you didn't do research, you'd be really shocked; maybe even sick. Ask the people that were ralphing all over the place. They had to close a bathroom due to puke and then someone just flat out let it go in the entrance to the theater. Nasty. But other than the cameras, the monster was alright. The little things were creepy. There were tons of questions that you'd want answered but it was done very well and if those I Am Legend zombies are running around, there's no one I'd rather have on my side than Cloverfield because that MF'er is crazy indestructible. I wasn't insanely gung ho for the last 6 months about seeing this movie but if they make the 2nd movie like rumors are hinting at, I'll be there.

I Am Legend

So it's been over a month now so I think I can finally revisit I Am Legend. I saw it back on December 22nd and it freaked me out and I just don't want to talk about it, ok? Nah, it did freak me out but it was more that I'm really lazy and didn't want to write about it and find the poster and resize it and FTP it. Anyway, the movie was good; it really drew me in and obviously those things were freaky as hell. Good concept, I even feel it's highly probable. Just keep ingesting all those gallons of artificial sweeteners people. You'll see. Still, Will Smith is awesome but in the end the suspense kills me. I can't stand suspense and movies with suspense in them. It woulda been much cooler without the zombie vampire creatures. It shoulda just been Will Smith, the dog and Fred. And Jessica Alba, Jessica Beil or Elisha Cuthbert. Elisah Cuthbert? When was she last in a movie anyone over the age of 18 saw? The suspense is killing me.

The Bourne Ultimatum

I went to see it Saturday and it was as awesome as I expected. I mean 5 years ago I just happened to have a free movie that I had to use or I was going to lose it. I just happened to catch the Bourne Identity, a movie I had absolutely no desire to see, and loved it. Then when Supremacy came out 3 years ago and didn't disappoint, I knew what I was getting with this film. Another awesome film to complete the trilogy. I can't see there being any more of these movies, but that's quite alright. They wrapped it up almost perfectly.

For those of you who haven't seen these movies, and I know you're out there, go see them. They are some of the best action movies ever. All 3 of them have to be very high on my list of just plain movies, let alone action movies. Not many movies grab a hold of me like this movie did, as I was practically out of my seat most of the movie and then laughing tons of other times, as Jason completely messed people up. What's great about this character though is that he's still human and very vulnerable. He's a man's man's Bond.

And the rest of the performers are great too. Julie Stiles... well I just can't complain about Julia Stiles. It's just another really well done movie and that's why it was probably my #1 most anticipated movie of the summer. With FF4, you didn't know what you were gonna get, but with this one, it's dead on greatness.

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer

Yesterday I went to see Rise of the Silver Surfer which was one of the two movies I was really waiting for this year. Growing up, it was Spiderman and then Fantastic Four as my two favorite comics. For some reason I was wasn't really as excited to see Spiderman as I was to see F4, probably because as I said in the last post, 3 movies might just be too much in most cases.

Anyway, this Fantastic Four was as expected. It had tons of cheesy moments, I feel it lost track a little too much with the wedding and celebrity stuff however it was carried by the fact that the Fantastic Four and the Silver Surfer are just too awesome. I only wish they involved Galactus a bit more; it couldn't have been that hard to actually show him and then make the end "fight" a little more involved with all the special effects resources we have today.

Other than that, it was a fun hour and a half. It makes me think though that perhaps the superhero movies have run their course and maybe cartoons (I want this) really are just the best way to put comics on display. I mean I have no beef with looking at Jessica Alba for 2 hours, actually I'm all for it, actually, it's a great idea. Lets have some more Fantastic Four movies. I want a 2.5 hour Inhumans and Skrull movie. The script's pretty much freakin written already. So let's do it. Do it!

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End

Last Saturday I saw Pirates. It was the same pirates as the last two, which made it good, but it just made it pretty much the same movie I saw 2 times before. I enjoyed it and it certainly kept me entertained but I find myself thinking about the whole Pirate trilogy rewatchability factor. I mean The Curse of the Black Pearl came out 4 years ago and I think I've only seen it 1 time outside of the theater. I never rewatched Dead Man's Chest. I think that's a problem with making too many sequels. I mean with the Lord of the Rings I set aside an entire day each year to watch them all because they're glorious. However I would never set a day aside to watch all 3 Pirates films and it's kind of like you can't watch just one. I don't know if I could even set aside a weekend for all 3 Pirates films. That's the same thing that happened to the Matrix. And I rewatched the Matrix tons of times; However since the sequels came out, that went out the window. Maybe it's time we stop it with the sequels and just come up with something new. I mean that's what made the Matrix and the original Pirates so spectacular; they were fun and original.

Anyway, At World's End was a decent way to not really end the sequels. Why couldn't they just wrap up the whole thing. I mean after the credits, I guess they wrapped up Will and Elizabeth's story however they left it completely open for Jack. I guess they're just saying that Jack's always gonna be doing his thing but I didn't like that at all. The rest of the movie though I was fine with. Pretty much all I can say about this movie is that it was nothing new but still alright.

August 3rd. We have a date.

And no, it's not what you think. It's the movie of the year. Yeah, I know I said Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer was the movie I was waiting for most, but that one's coming out tomorrow and I could almost care less now. Well not quite. Sorry Silver Surfer, I still can't wait to see you on Saturday. Man, now I feel bad. But anyway, the movie I wasn't sure when it was coming out but I just found out about it because there's a commercial now is The Bourne Ultimatum. I knew it was coming out soon but I didn't think end of summer soon. Oh man, August 3rd. Awesome.

Spiderman 3

I went to see Spiderman 3 yesterday and was very happy with how it turned out. I was never really worried about it. We've already seen what they did with the first two; How bad could this one turn out? Over the last few months I've heard some people complaining about this movie having too many villains but I think they did an insanely awesome job of cramming the movie full of villains, action and especially wrapping it up.

Everything in my mind was awesome. With the exception of Mary Jane. I'm not a fan of Mary Jane. She's just a big pain trying to bring down Spidey when he's off trying to save everyone. Waaaaaaaaaaaaah!!! Look at me, I don't sing good. People are mean. Waaaaaaaaaaah!!! I figure by now everyone has seen the movie. Anyway, the scene when Spidey has completely turned and brought the hot Gwen Stacy to snagletooth Mary Jane's jazz club was great.

All in all, bad Peter Parker was hilarious, Venom looked awesome as hell, Sandman was definitely not too much and the ending which I won't discuss in detail because I don't feel like it, was done perfectly. There's really nothing more I would have added to film except for removing that stupid, what felt like, 10 minute lovey dovey scene with Peter and MJ when the symbiote crashed with a 10 minute J.J.'s son brings the symbiote back from outer space on his shuttle. That's all.

I'm not sure if this will in fact be the last Spiderman movie but if it is, they did a real nice job with them. If they do decide to keep the series going, I'm not going to complain.

300

I saw 300 on Saturday afternoon and despite hearing nothing but bad reviews, I was incredibly happy with what I saw, got exactly what I wanted out of the movie and felt it was well worth the wait. It was a damn good movie. The battle scenes were awesome, the other stuff was good, the awesome battle scenes took up like 85% of the movie which was awesome and it ended awesomely. I don't really feel like discussing the battle scenes in detail but there was so much energy during them that you can't help not fall in love with it. And despite hearing about bad acting, I thought everyone did just fine. Leonidas was an awesome King, but I guess the Spartans as a whole were an impressive people. This was such a better movie than Troy was. I can't say that it was better than Gladiator because, well hell, it's Gladiator, but pound for pound I'd put its entertainment value up against anything. I was excited for this movie for a while, and it's only March, but this might just end up being the best movie of the year. These summer blockbusters have a lot of work to do. I'm talking to you Silver Surfer.

Second Annual Terententen Lord of the Rings All Day Marathon Blast

And so it came to pass that on the 17th day of the 2nd month of the year 2007, the Second Annual Terententen Lord of the Rings Festival went off without a hitch. The 13 1/2 hours flew by incredibly fast and the movies further solidified their place among the greats. I cannot decide which movie is the best, they're all better in different ways, however watching them together as one movie is just an incredible experience. And the scene at the end of the Return of the King where Aragorn bows to the Hobbits is the single greatest scene of any movie ever. The festival started at 9:30AM and ended at 11:00PM and the only downfall to this festival is, of course, that it has to end. It was a great day of food, beverage and cinema. A great festival indeed.

Bad, bad movie.

I have now seen a movie as bad as Gone Fishin'. Well part of it anyway. It's only the 2nd movie I've really tried watching and had to turn off. I doubt I would have left the movie theater after paying for it, but I certainly would have regretted spending the money just the same. It was just terrible.

If you've tried watching Date Movie then you know what I mean. I regret wasting an hour and a half on my DVR. I made it about 20 minutes and I couldn't take it any more. I'm done thinking about it.

Rocky Balboa

I saw Rocky Balboa last Saturday. It's been a week but I haven't really thought about this movie too much since I saw it. That's just how it was. My expectations were set way too high even though I knew going in that there was no way it could clear the bar I had set for it. Waited way too long and loved the older Rocky movies so much that I put this movie on a pedestal. A premature pedestal. And it didn't help that working at Planet Hollywood surrounded me with everything Rocky for about a month before the movie.

So it was my mistake. I mean Rocky Balboa was most certainly better than Rocky V, but it couldn't hold a steroid needle, a crazy Soviet accent or an Eye of the Tiger to Rocky IV. It seemed to me like a geriatric version of Rocky. Which it was I guess? Here's Rocky, down and out but hungry and then here's this woman who he's chasing (even though it was almost impossible to believe) and then there's Rocky training and then in the ring. It could have been great but there was just way too much other woman stuff going on. I mean Adrian was gone, they could have focused so much on Rocky and fighting and building up Mason "the Line" Dixon but instead they introduce a new love interest and... her kid? Are you kidding me? So Mason Dixon just coasts through the movie, never reaching the potential of an Apollo Creed or a Clubber Lang, an Ivan Drago, heck barely even Thunderlips.

I know there won't be another Rocky movie after this one, but we really don't need one. Rocky I-IV is all I'll ever need. I was content before I even knew Stallone wanted to do this one. But I'm pretty sure at the time, I liked this movie a lot more than I can remember now. So heck, I'll throw Rocky Balboa in there on occasion too. Just not as much. Maybe in a marathon or something. Like a Terententen Rocky All Day Marathon Blast. Now that sounds like a plan.

Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan

So on Friday I wasn't feeling too good so drinking was out. Instead I went to see Borat. Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan. Well let's just say, holy crap, I can't believe what I saw. Well actually I can believe some of it because I saw quite a bit of previews, but I still cannot believe what I was watching. I haven't laughed that hard in a movie since I saw a guy get hit in the face with a wrench and then a man get hit by a car. It was foul, disgusting, funny, hilarious, and the debate over whether it's PG-13 or R is now over. NC 17 might be more like it. I found this quote online, and I quote,

"...showing male nudity in a way that has never been previously done in a main stream 20th Century Fox Film."

It was horribly hilarious from beginning to end. From the subtle undertones of antisemitism?... to the whole lot of shocking moments, the movie is... well as a comedy, it's brilliant. The movie pokes as much fun at Americans throughout the movie as it does Kazakhstanians. Although I'm going to completely believe that that's how people in Kazakhstan are because what I see in movies are true. And I think he made up all the personalities of the Americans. Except those southerners. Those people are crazy. See the movie. It's hysterical.

The Departed

This weekend I went to see The Departed. I was originally going to wait until HBO to see this movie however I had a free movie ticket that expired this week and I didn't want to waste it. This isn't my normal type of movie, I normally gravitate towards comedies and lighter films, however I always seem to like movies like these once I watch them. I've never been too big of a DiCaprio fan although I did like his last 2 movies. He was alright in this one but there's just something about him I don't like. The story was pretty good though. And the whole cast was massive. DiCaprio, Damon, Nicholson, Wahlberg, Martin Sheen, Alec Baldwin... fantastic. Mark Wahlberg is like a mini Matt Damon and he was awesome in his small supporting role. (Yeah, this was definitely back to back Wahlberg movies for me.) I'm just glad that I work a boring I.T. life and didn't join the mob to infiltrate the police force or become an undercover cop to infiltrate the mob. But this movie had me on the edge of my seat for a while... or maybe it was my groin... nonono, I was enthralled after about 30 minutes and the final 2 hours flew by like I don't know what happened. Only I do know what happened and although the ending wasn't completely happy, I guess it worked out like it should have.

Invincible

Yesterday I saw Invincible and it was glorious. Right from the intro, perfectly set to music from Philly's own Jim Croce, you watched the people and just thought about home. Sure it was the 70s but it didn't change that much from when I was growing up. Moreso than in any Philadelphia movie, I really felt like they were my people in the stands, my people walking the streets, even the houses, the way of life, and hell, even the same old Eagles. But they're our Eagles and throughout the movie there was always hope. Hope that Vince would make the team and hope that the Eagles would win and someday turn this thing around. It wasn't a real big football movie like Any Given Sunday and it wasn't a real big underdog movie like Rudy but it found a good place for itself and certainly hit the spot. Mark Wahlberg played a great athlete and he played an even better blue collar guy. I just really liked everything about the movie. The whole cast, the fact it's set in Philadelphia and also that it's about the best football team in all of the land.

Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby

How can I sum up Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby? Right about how I summed up Anchorman after I first saw it, only with a little more hope thanks to Anchorman. It wasn't that great. It was ok; it had a lot of funny moments. However I found myself laughing because I felt like I should be laughing. Even with time, I doubt it'll compare to Anchorman only because it had a lot more plot than Anchorman which doesn't work in the favor of a movie like this, however I really won't know what to say until I buy the movie. I can say what I didn't like. Molly Shannon. Her scenes were so not funny. Laughing at them was a bad choice. I thought after Serendipity she would turn into a serious actress because she's just not funny, however here she is again not being funny. What I did like? Well the more I think about it, a lot. Only time will tell if this will be a classic. Hey, you never know; it might just win an Academy Award. For what? Best movie ever made.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

So last Saturday I saw Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. I have to agree with pretty much everything I've read everywhere else. The movie is real good, almost on par with the first, however it has too many slow parts unfortunately, including the beginning, which keep it lacking. Still, I'm certainly psyched over the sequel. I would've preferred this movie have a concrete ending so that it could stand on its own, however nothing's perfect. Not even the LotR. But come on. The hype surrounding this movie was extroadinarily uncalled for. You would think you'd be safe going to the theater at 3PM, however I ended up having to see, I believe, the 4:30PM movie and waiting in a line to buy the ticket and a line to wait for the movie and a line for my soda like it was the first showing of the first virtual reality porno on a planet with only straight guys. Well not quite, but the movie obviously did very well since it had the highest grossing weekend ever. Certainly not worth that much, but overall it was an enjoyable flick because the cast is awesome and the story is awesome.

Superman Returns

No one is going to see Superman Returns and that is sad because it really is a good movie. It's getting tons of good reviews and it just makes no sense. The movie stayed true to its roots, that new guy did a pretty decent job at being Clark and Superman and he also did a good job at keeping like Christopher Reeves' likeable character. I mean this is a pretty big role to play for your first movie. Unless maybe that's why no one's going to see it. The fact that a big name movie star isn't playing the lead is keeping people away? If they had gotten a nut like Tom Cruise to play Superman, would everyone have been happy? Anyway, it's stupid. One thing I didn't like though was the chemistry between Superman and Lois. Like the fact that if I didn't know better, it would have been awkward. I almost actually wanted her to stay with Cyclops rather than go with Superman and that's just not right. Margot Kidder would have never moved on from Superman. Not in a million years. But then there were a lot of neat moments in the movie for nerds and when he flew up to the sun to heal himself before going back for Lex... I just thought it was well done. Another good thing was that it was 2 1/2 hours and still felt fast. I like long movies that don't get cut up because they'd be too long for moviegoers and I like it even more when you can't tell. Long superhero movies are the best. Except for the fact that I had to piss like a racehorse for about an hour and a half. But that's not the movie's fault. I can't get mad at you.

X-Men: The Last Stand

I finally saw X-Men 3 last night and I really enjoyed it. I'd put it right up there with the first X-Men movie. It could have been much better though. There were too many non important characters and not enough Gambit. And they could have portrayed Phoenix much better. Like red glowy awesomeness. They killed off too many people, but I like how they did leave it wide open for another movie if we get lucky enough. Magneto just cannot lose his powers to some stupid mutant cure. But it would sure be nice if they went on and did a 4th one and it would be even better if they brought Brian Singer back because X2 was by far the best film. However, it looks like he's already set to do Superman sequel which would set him back another few years. It doesn't look it's gonna happen. But back to the movie. Juggernaut was awesome. He was always a favorite. And Phoenix's powers were incredible too. Shoulda posted this last night while the thoughts were more fresh in my mind, but I'll I'm definitely looking forward to the DVD release. And I'm definitely looking forward to the Wolverine movie due out next year. That should be outstanding.
