One Last Top Album

  • Huggybear - Huggybear and FriendsHuggybear - Huggybear and Friends : Let's not forget what has to be one of the top album of the decade and THE best album of 2009. I tried to avoid being biased so I kept it off of the list but for some strange reason there's a special place in my heart for this album. Huggybear and Friends is a hip-hop masterpiece almost 5 years in the making. If you haven't done so already, go get yourself a copy over at the Huggybear and Friends Last.FM page.

Top Albums of the 00's: Number 1

  1. Radiohead - In RainbowsRadiohead - In Rainbows : Forget Kid A... This is where it's at. This is where Radiohead, as a band, wanted to be when they made Kid A. Otherwise I don't think Thom Yorke releases The Eraser in 2006. Once he got that off his chest, he was able to return to the band and write what could be their best album. The fact that I have to question whether or not this album is better than OK Computer means it has my top spot for album of the decade. To put things into perspective, Radiohead gave me this album for free because they knew I would go out and buy it the second it was out on CD. And I did. I spent money on something that I already received for free, months before.

All of the songs are incredible but at this moment, the highlights for me are - 15 Step, Bodysnatchers, Nude, Weird Fishes/Arpeggi, House Of Cards, Jigsaw Falling Into Place

Top Albums of the 00's: Number 2

  1. Linkin Park - Hybrid TheoryLinkin Park - Hybrid Theory (2000) : Almost half of the songs on this album were singles and I still don't think it spawned enough. Every song on this album could and should have been a hit on the radio. It's short and sweet and no matter how over exposed we all were to these songs, I'll never tire of them.

Top Albums of the 00's: Number 3

  1. A Perfect Circle - Mer De NomsA Perfect Circle - Mer De Noms (2000) : Very rarely do I hear a song from an unknown band on the radio and immediately like it, then go and listen to the album, turn it off after 6 tracks because it's unbearable to listen to, pick it up 4 months later and listen to it 7 times in a row and then 9 years later declare it once of the decade's best. I had this one ranked #1 for good chunk of the time I was writing this list but after a lot of thought, it found it's spot at #3. In a time completely overrun with Nu Metal, A Perfect Circle opened my ears to what rock music could be. I remember it like it was yesterday.... Walking around campus on a beautiful Fall day at Penn State. It was one of my 8AM-5PM Freshman days. I had other CDs with me but I couldn't stop listening to this disc and it just kept getting better. Good times.

Top Albums of the 00's: Number 4

  1. John Mayer - ContinuumJohn Mayer - Continuum (2006) : So John gets tired of pop music, really loves the blues, jams with some buddies, tours as a blues trio, puts out a live disc and then immediately heads back to the studio to record an album that's going to be hard to top. All the pop elements are still there in the beautiful yet catchy, radio friendly tunes however John fattens the whole thing up with traces of the Trio. Everybody wins.

Top Albums of the 00's: Number 5

  1. Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LPEminem - The Marshall Mathers LP (2000) : Even moreso than non rap albums, it seems like most rap albums only ever have 1 or 2 good songs that can make it to radio and that's it. Those songs are normally surrounded by complete unlistenable garbage never to be heard from again. This album on the other hand had it's 2 radio friendly singles but then it had everything else... blood, guts, guns, cuts, knives, lives, wives, nuns, sluts. Just no Drips. From start to finish, this was Eminem after he had to try really hard but before he had to start trying too hard again. He had mastered his craft and that is why he was the top selling artist of the decade. I now have 3 rap albums under my belt which I never would have made if it wasn't for this album. I'd venture to say that I never even listen to rap music if this album isn't made.

Top Albums of the 00's: Number 6

  1. Paulson - All At OncePaulson - All At Once (2005) : This could be the catchiest record of all time from a band that nobody has or probably ever will hear of. The moment I heard Miami Current, there was no turning back. This album just has everything that popular music could ask for. Yet... it is not popular. It's a really big world out there. That's the only explanation how these guys are virtual unknowns.

Top Albums of the 00's: Number 7

  1. John Mayer - Room for SquaresJohn Mayer - Room For Squares (2001) : My favorite riff of all time might not be found on a Cream or Jimi Hendrix album. It may not have been played by Randy Rhoads or Jimmy Page. No, my favorite riff of all time may have been recorded by a 22 year old white dude from Connecticut. Sure, Neon may have been written and released first in 1999 but I didn't hear it until I heard it on this album burried in between pop track after pop track. Oh yeah, all those pop rock tunes grew on me. Don't worry about all the screaming girls; John Mayer knows how to write a song. I've been hooked ever since. Coheed and Cambria - Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of MadnessCoheed and Cambria - Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness (2005) : I'm not sure what I can write about this record that would do it justice. It's a concept rock opera with a bizarre, yet humorous, concept that definitely works. The music is captivating... Hard prog rock with dynamic hooks and melodies and ups and downs. There are the single worthy songs but it's just too hard to not listen to this album in it's entirety. Take the entire journey. It's 1 hour and 11 minutes well spent.

Top Albums of the 00's: Number 9

  1. Radiohead - Hail to the ThiefRadiohead - Hail to the Thief (2003) : There will be no Kid A on this list. Sorry. Perhaps I'm not cool or music savvy enough to fully appreciate that album in all of its majesty. There will also be no Amnesiac on this list. It was a step in the right direction but Radiohead wasn't quite there yet with the direction they wanted to take their music. This album on the other hand. Amazing. It's spacy but finally not too overbearing and they were finally able to find a good balance between the electronics and a good old fashioned guitar. When it comes to Radiohead, I'll take the middle road to the land of musical pretentiousness.

Top Albums of the 00's: Number 10

  1. Weezer - Green AlbumWeezer - Green Album (2001) : There was a time this decade when all I listened to was Weezer. This record is why. It's what got me into the group. After I heard this album, I finally gave the non single tracks on the Blue Album another chance and then discovered a little gem called Pinkerton which I never even knew existed. Thank heaven for that. For me though, this is defintely where it all started. There's not a bad song on this record and every song has me singing within 10 seconds. The songs are tight and poppy. It's just a real fun disc. Just what everyone could use once in a while. Weezer released a good deal of music in the last 10 years but this was easily their best material during the span.

Top Albums of the 00's: 15-11

Today we'll continue the countdown with 5 more.
  1. The Mars Volta - De-Loused in the Comatorium (2003) : I don't do drugs but if I did, the first thing I would listen to while on them is Dark Side of the Moon. And then I would probably listen to this. It is as much art as it is music. It kind of reminds me of a splatter painting. Mars Volta just threw random notes on paper and somehow it just worked. I have no idea how they come up with this stuff. The music seems so scattered but it's one hell of a ride as everything races around to catch up with itself.
Highlights - Inertiatic ESP, Roulette Dares (The Haunt Of), Televators
  2. Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not (2006) : One of the most fun albums of the decade. It's almost impossible to sit still while listening to the energy they managed to fit on 1 CD. It's practically a relief when you reach "Riot Van" midway through the disc as you almost definitely need a break from the 100 mph of the rest of the album. I only wish this album would have came out a few years earlier as it would have sure been fun to listen to during those long nights of pong.
Highlights - I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor, When The Sun Goes Down, From The Ritz To The Rubble
  3. Red Hot Chili Peppers - By The Way (2002) : I don't know what to write about this album. It's nothing ground breaking but it was a slight departure away from your typical Chili Pepper sound. A lot less funk and a whole lot more melodies and harmonies. It had a lot of big singles but it didn't seem to have much staying power and it seems like everyone, including me to some extent, has forgotten about this beautiful record. I listened to it straight through for the first time in a long time while writing this up and it definitely reminded me why it had to make this list.
Highlights - Dosed, Tear, Venice Queen
  4. Eminem - Eminem Show (2002) : Arguably Eminem's best album. Even after the enormous success of the Marshall Mathers LP, Eminem still came back heavier and just as angry at the world. Unfortunately this was the last album where he wouldn't realize how rich he really was.
Highlights - Business, Hailie's Song, 'Till I Collapse
  5. Sinch - Clearing The Channel (2005) : Sinch found some minor success after the debut of their first major label release, the self titled Sinch, earlier in the decade. Somehow their success was shortlived and it was only downhill from there. It's literally mind blowing how they didn't explode onto the music scene after they made this record. There's a reason the music industry is dying and I think it may just be because guys like these are stuck working regular 9-5s.
Hightlights - Identity Theft, Sails, The Power of Suggestion
Tomorrow we get into the big guns and start the #10.

Top Albums of the 00's: 20-16

Let's begin.
  1. Here we have my honorable mentions, so to speak, all grouped up into 1. My musical tastes changed a lot this decade and this is probably where they started as they carried over from the last decade, so we can't just forget them. These guys were all considered, and might just deserve a spot higher on here, but they just didn't make the cut. So... here they are in no particular order:
    • New Found Glory - New Found Glory (2000) : Completely solid from top to bottom. Not a bad track.
Highlights - Better Off Dead, Hit or Miss, All About Her
    • Blink-182 - Take Off Your Pants and Jacket (2001)
Highlights - Anthem Part 2, Online Songs, Reckless Abandon
    • Millencolin - Pennybridge Pioneers (2000) : Sure it won't win any awards but if there's one album on this list that makes me feel young again, it's this one. Where's the award for that?
Highlights - No Cigar, Duck Pond, A-Ten
  2. The Killers - Hot Fuss (2004) : This album made me change my tune on really popular music as I was pretty late to the game with these guys. I finally said who cares if it's really trendy, I like it. I recently heard the melody to Smile Like You Mean it as background music in a commercial and I said to myself, "Ooh, that's nice. That songs gonna make it." before I realized what it was. I'm only upset that living in Vegas, I didn't find them sooner.
Highlights - Mr. Brightside, Somebody Told Me, All These Things That I've Done
  3. Dashboard Confessional - The Places You Have Come To Fear The Most (2001) : I may not want to paint my fingernails black, stretch my ear lobes out and then kill myself however there's definitely a little spot in my music library for this album.
Highlights - The Best Deceptions, Saints and Sailors, The Places You Have Come To Fear The Most
  4. Element of Surprise - U:pside Down (2002?) : Notched down a few pegs for the brevity of the record but it made the list because E:OS knocked it out of the park with this pop/rock/metal nugget.
Highlights - There're only 6 tracks, I have them all ranked the same. Listen to the whole album, it's only 24 minutes.
  5. Sinch - Sinch (2002) : This is some solid hard rock. Loud and energizing yet subltle and melodic. 10 years earlier and this album may have been huge.
Highlights - Seven, The Silent Aquiescence Of Millions, Bitmap
Tune back in tomorrow for albums 15-11.

Top Albums of the 00's: A List

Lists are fun but they're never easy. I almost wasn't going to do this segment and as I was writing it all up I must have talked myself out of it a numerous amount of times. I'm glad I persisted though as it forced me to listen to a lot of great music over the last week. Coming up over the next 11 days, I will be posting my thoughts on MY top albums of the decade and somehow giving them a number to signify their greatness. Well +/- 1 or so. Hey, it's almost a ridiculous task to compare apples to oranges or in some cases, apples to apples. Regardless of what their number is, these are the albums that I was consumed by when they came out or when I finally got around to discovering them... they're the ones that I just couldn't stop listening to until the people around me probably started getting annoyed at the amount of times they were listening to the same thing over and over again. I say they should have just been happy that this decade stopped me from listening to the Beatles incessantly but some people won't see it that way. Probably because I still managed to listen to the Beatles incessantly. So tune in tomorrow when I'll get this thing started and reveal albums 20-16. I know you're all super excited and can't wait.

Jonny Greenwood on the MP3

Here's a quick little interview with Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood on his thoughts about the MP3 and sound quality. Dithering: Jonny Greenwood. Seeing as Radiohead are one of the most popular bands in the world, Matt loves them so much, and they're also at the forefront of this new digital music movement it's interesting to hear his take on the future of music. They released their last album, In Rainbows, digital only through their website months before it was available in CD form and it made a huge splash in the music industry. More recently they've released a few singles on their website, obviously digital only copies.

I'm personally not in love with this whole movement because I like album art and liner notes however the moment I'm done flipping through the pages, I instantly rip the music and throw the CD on a shelf seldom to be heard from again. It's kind of sad. Regardless his answer to the last question really hit home for me. It's a demon that I've definitely been fighting with over the last decade. I'm afraid I'm losing.

SFJ: What are your favorite and least favorite aspects of the MP3 age?

JG: The downside is that people are encouraged to own far more music than they can ever give their full attention to. People will have MP3s of every Miles Davis record but never think of hearing any of them twice in a rowtheres just too much to get through. Youre thinking, Ive got Sketches of Spain and Bitches Brewlets zip through those while Im finishing that e-mail. That abundance can push any music into background music, furniture music.

Michael Jackson: 1958 - 2009

Michael JacksonIts been a long time since I heard news that I wished wasnt true as much as this story. Ill remember the first time I saw Thriller and being scared out of my mind. Ill remember waiting for what seemed like forever to see the hyped debut of the Jam video with Michael Jordan. And Ill definitely remember driving home from the Red Hot Chili Peppers concert, parked in traffic, cranking MJ while everyone who walked by the car, exiting a rock concert, danced and had a great time.

However, not only did MJ bring fans of different music genres together, he brought the entire world together. People from all around the globe simply loved MJ. Few have had a comparable following and were adored as he was. He IS a legend. So he returned the favor by creating... innovating... great pop music.

There are so many great places you go back to listening to MJs music and I actually cant think of his music being associated with any bad moments in my life. Sure he had more bad than good times over the last 2 decades but I think he definitely has a lot more fans than foes and his legacy will definitely live on in a positive note. His catalog is just too good not to give him that.

There were the early years with probably my favorite MJ song, Rock With You, the ridiculous 80s stuff where everything was incredible, the 90s stuff which could never quite live up to the earlier music but was still great music and there were even some gems like You Rock My World that came out towards the end. It was a great career spanning decades.

It was always sad to see MJ pop up in the news in horrible ways but we can always crank up the tunes and forget about those times just as we can crank up his music to escape our own bad times. We can all thank him for that. He was in the spotlight for over 40 years and I guess he simply decided that he had enough. Michael Jackson was not just the King of Pop, he IS pop. Everyone else is in another genre. He will be missed.

The 100 Greatest Singers of All Time

Rolling Stone has put out a new list and you know how I feel about Rolling Stone lists. I don't always agree with them but I can't get enough of them. They're usually a friendly reminder of just how great music used to be. This time it's in the form of the 100 Greatest Singers of all time. You may not agree with everything on the list but it's impossible to dismiss the sheer amount of great music listed on that page. It's just ridiculous. I want to listen to it all. Right now.

This just in... My Chemical Romace may cause bleeding from the head region.

Yeah, it could be bleeding from the eyes or the ears or just vomiting. It's late, I was about to go to bed, but I felt as compelled as I've ever felt about anything in my life to make it known that while watching Saturday Night Live, My Chemical Romance performed and they could take the honor of the worst band of all time. I didn't want to risk forgetting it. I've never heard or saw them before. I just knew they existed. However I stood there watching in horror as they did whatever crap that was that they do like I was watching Boobah or something. It was so horrific I couldn't take my eyes off of it. Like a terrible car crash. It had the look and the sound and everything. The lead singer could be the creepiest dude of all time, the music was just awful and it makes me hate everything. Kinda makes me wish that the 5th Element failed. If movies were real. Unless of course My Chemical Romance is that pure evil death planet. Then I'm rooting for the 5th Element. And for Tony Romo to sustain a serious injury. Maybe Leeloo could take care of that one as well if she has a second. And no I didn't just watch the 5th Element. Check my list. It's been a few months.

Summer Mixes 2007

Alright guys, just send em out tomorrow. July 28th, 2007. Summer started a week ago tomorrow, so it sounds good to me. Like usual, I'm going to send mine out using YouSendIt. I'll send mine out to Rob, Matt, Tim and Christian. If Tim and Christian don't want them, they can delete them. It's just that Tim hinted that he wanted in on the thing and Christian, once upon a time, used to be a part of this mix series. I know I'm definitely eager to hear some interesting, eclectic, mixes, so why wait any longer?

Summer Mixes 2007

Anyone interested in doing Summer Mixes again this year? Because if you are, it's almost that time again. June 21st is the first day of summer. I had originally wanted to post about this earlier so we had a month to get them ready but with all the problems with the page, that can't happen now. But who says they have to be ready on the first day of summer? If you decided to do one, get it ready so that it can be sent out by... how about July 1st? That's almost a full month to get them ready. If everyone has em ready by June 21st, then we'll do that, but post some comments and let everyone know where you stand.

So Huggybear's MySpace page has been updated with a new layout and new songs. I just ripped off Rob's MySpace page with Rob's help and then changed like 3 or so things and then threw on the awesome music. 3 new songs up on that jaun. All of them awesomer than the next. So if you listen to them repeatedly they just keep getting awesomer. It does make sense.

Kanye West and more.

So yesterday at around noon our theater gave out free tickets to see Fusion which is a music festival to celebrate the Chinese New Year. The cast was going to include Kanye West so that was enough for me. I'm not the biggest fan of his but for free I couldn't turn it down. Even if it was slated to start at 7-8PM on a school night. They were probably like $80 seats which sounds like a lot but this is Vegas and they rip you off for shows. Our seats were way in the back. The expensive seats were like $160.

Anyway, the only other band that I knew was gonna be there was Gnarls Barkley whom I don't like at all. Turns out there were tons of insanely crappy acts there. It started with this pink haired hip hop chick rapping about how she wants my DNA. I was not impressed. Then it was something else crappy I'm sure. I think it was this guy DJ who goes by the name Girl Talk but says he's not a DJ. He was doing some interesting rock/hip hop mash up stuff throughout the night but all I really wanted to hear was Kanye. The guy was from Pittsburgh and said that the people in Pittsburgh never sit down for his stuff so why was everyone in Vegas sitting. Matt thinks it's because everyone in Pittsburgh is running for the exits. I was thinking more along the lines of he was a white dude from Pittsburgh playing on his computer in front of a predominantly African American audience who really only wanted to hear Kanye and were being subjected to 4 hours of torture.

So next was some uninteresting Chinese New Year Matrix/Mortal Kombat thing and then the main show. Kicking it off was Spank Rock. I'll be nice and say I just wanted to hear Kanye. However then, something awesome happened. A guy by the name of Lupe Fiasco whom I was unaware of until last night, came out and just was awesome. This guy alone woulda made the show worth my while. He was really good. I can't stress that enough.
After him was Gnarley Barkley. They did like 25 minutes of stuff including Crazy. People loved it. I don't see what the big deal is. Definitely not a fan. But then at like 11:40PM Kanye came on. Sweet. He was hilarious and performed for at least an hour. We left right before the end but I was told he didn't do anymore songs. He did all his hits and more and was as arrogant as ever. Very energetic and it was definitely a good show.

So in the end I was glad I went. I was asleep by 1:30AM just in time to wake up at 6:10AM to get ready for work. And it's now 7PM the next day, or the same day depending on how you look at it, and I'm doing just fine. I'm not putting it up with the RHCP/Weezer free show because RHCP were the best live band I've ever seen, but it was really, really worth the money. Maybe even a little bit more.

So I moved in a week ago today. I haven't spent much time on the internet since then though. It took a few days to get everything hooked up and we still have tons of boxes to unpack, but man, I hooked up my computer speakers last night and I get some sort of amazing acoustics from this room and also in the connecting bathroom. It's unbelievable. I think I get surround sound from 2 speakers because of it. Amazing. I can't wait to start working on the album again. Hot, Hot, Hot... or Cold? A Terententen.com Wintry Mix

I sent my mix out tonight to those who are participating. I hope you guys can pull some stuff from it. There's some fluff on there, but overall it goes really good together. I really wanted the first song on there so the whole mix is based off of that. No one will like that song, I'm sure of it, but it's there. I went more like my 2nd mix than my 1st mix from the Summer series since that's what you guys seemed to like more. Send yours out. I'm currently watching: NFL Football: Kansas City Chiefs at Oakland Raiders

Winter Mixes

Let's roll back to Tuesday, November 28, 2006. That's the day that I said you had 3 weeks to get a mix ready if you wanted to participate in the Terententen Winter Mix series. That day 3 weeks from then turns out to be tomorrow. Let's see who's participating and start getting them sent out. I guess we'll be using YouSendIt again, so post in the comments that you're participating, leave your email address and we'll get them sent out; hopefully by Friday. Break.

Gwen Stefani has reached a new low.

She's on SNL right now. I've said it before about other music, however Gwen Stefani has officially created THE worst song in the history of the universe. There's yodeling and noises, grunts and yells and horrible outfits and terrible circus music. And it's all rolled up into one song. I think I'd rather listen to that Papa Roach song I declared the worst song ever a few years back than this song again. I'd only listen to it again if it meant that Rob had to listen to it and suffer as much as I just did because then I could at least find some humor in it all. Otherwise I might just kill myself. It's like she actually realized she can take a shit, record it and sell a million records. Yes, others have tried before but she has made it on SNL by doing it. Oh, and she's gonna sell records. People are dying in the Middle East and she's creating the worst music in the history of the universe. Matt, you should stop locking your door all the time and just turn off your TV because you have a better chance of dying from a self inflicted gun shot to the head from listening to this Gwen Stefani song as you do from having some criminal break into your apartment and kill you. This song has officially made life not fair.

Winter Mixes

Due to a little bit of interest, and since the last one turned out pretty good, I was thinking about doing another mix. We did a summer mix, now lets try a winter mix. And this time I'm giving you all plenty of heads up. It's still November. I'm giving you until Winter starts, fitting... yes, I know, but that would make December 21st, or 3 weeks from this Thursday. That's a hell of a lot of time. Give it some thought, take your time and let's get some good mixes to listen to.

Dragonforce - Through the Fire and Flames

If this is where rock music is headed, I'm buyin. It's better than 85% of the stuff out there now.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Kiss fans protest outside Rock Hall. And the guy in the picture pretty much sums up why Kiss should not be in the Rock Hall. Painting your face and wearing elaborate costumes doesn't make you rock hard. And when you suck and no one likes you when you take off the gimmick, that also doesn't make you rock.

Mixes

Alright, I guess it's time we start getting the mixes out. Anyone who has a mix or wants a mix, we'll probably just use YouSendIt.com. Take all your tracks, your cover art and a .txt file with the track listings, toss it into a folder and zip it. Then just gather the info from the Comments section of this post and send it to all who request it. Sounds simple enough? That's because it is. We can give it a day and send them out on Wednesday the 2nd.

The Rob Syndrome:

Corollary 1 - You cannot like a band if they become popular.
Corollary 2 - You cannot like a band's 2nd album.
Corollary 3 - You cannot like a band unless there is a great deal of yelling.
